Safe housing, secure schools, access to water, and functional community spaces are essential foundations for child development. At Grace Honduras, we work to improve the environments where children live, learn, and grow.
Why Safe Spaces Matter
At Grace Honduras, we have learned that a child’s future is shaped by much more than what happens inside a classroom.
Many of the children we serve return each day to homes built from discarded materials recovered from the landfill. Some live in overcrowded shelters with leaking roofs, dirt floors, no running water, limited sanitation, and little protection from weather, theft, or violence.
When a child grows up in an environment where basic safety is uncertain, learning becomes significantly more difficult. Chronic stress, instability, and insecurity affect concentration, memory, emotional regulation, and overall development.
That is why we believe education cannot be separated from the environments in which children live.
Providing a safe home, repairing a roof, installing a door, improving access to water, or creating a secure place to sleep are not separate from our mission. They are part of creating the conditions that allow children to learn, grow, and imagine a future beyond survival.
Our goal has never been to educate children. Our goal is to help create the stability, dignity, and opportunities that allow entire families to move beyond the cycle of poverty.
Housing Support and Community Infrastructure
Since 2020, Grace Honduras has partnered with donors, volunteers, and organizations to improve living conditions for some of the most vulnerable families connected to the San Pedro Sula landfill community.
Through these partnerships, seven homes have been built, purchased, restored, or significantly improved for families living in extreme poverty.
Projects have included:
• Construction of new family homes
• Roof replacement and structural repairs
• Installation of doors and windows
• Electrical improvements
• Sanitation and latrine construction
• General housing rehabilitation
These efforts have been made possible through the support of GlobalGiving, Ruth Cheung, Timothy Bouldry, and other generous partners committed to helping families build safer futures.
At the same time, Grace Honduras has invested heavily in improving its own educational campus. What began as an abandoned storage building with no doors, windows, or adequate learning space has gradually transformed into a school serving more than 130 children and adolescents.
Today, the campus includes classrooms, a kitchen, administrative offices, recreational areas, security improvements, water infrastructure, and ongoing facility development projects designed to create a safe and welcoming environment for every child.
What We See in the Communities We Serve
During home visits, we often encounter families living in conditions that most people would find difficult to imagine.
Homes built from scrap wood, plastic sheets, discarded metal, and materials recovered from the landfill itself.
Dirt floors that turn to mud during heavy rains.
Families cooking over improvised fires.
Overcrowded living spaces separated only by curtains or bedsheets.
Limited access to clean water, sanitation, electricity, or secure shelter.
These conditions do not define the children we serve, but they shape the challenges they face every day.
The Transformation of Grace
When Grace Honduras began operating from this property, the building was abandoned and largely unusable.
Over the past decade, donors, volunteers, churches, businesses, and community partners have helped transform it into a safe and welcoming educational center serving 130 children and adolescents.

What We Are Working On Today: Playground Restoration Project
Every child deserves a safe place to play, explore, and be a child.
For years, the Grace Honduras playground has been one of the most loved spaces on campus. However, exposure to weather, constant use, and repeated vandalism have taken a significant toll on the equipment and the surrounding infrastructure.
Today, we are restoring and upgrading the entire playground to create a safer, more durable, and more secure environment for the children we serve.
The project includes the repair and restoration of existing playground equipment, structural improvements, enhanced security measures, and protective infrastructure designed to prevent future vandalism and ensure the playground remains a safe space for years to come.
As part of this effort, new security cameras, perimeter protection, and facility improvements are being installed to help safeguard both the playground and the broader school campus.
This project is being made possible through the generosity of Bedford Community Church and the many individuals who have contributed through their support and donations. Their partnership is helping create a place where children can play freely, build friendships, strengthen social skills, and experience the joy of childhood in a safe environment.
We expect this project to benefit not only the students of Grace Honduras but also other children from the surrounding community who will have access to a secure and welcoming place to play.
