Grace Educational Program
Education designed for children the system often leaves behind.
The Grace Educational Program exists to break the cycle of poverty that has trapped generations of families living and working around the San Pedro Sula landfill.
We serve approximately 130 children, adolescents, and adults each year through a flexible educational model designed specifically for students living in extreme poverty.
Many of our students have spent part of their childhood working inside the landfill, either independently or alongside their parents. Without intervention, many would never complete basic education, and some would never learn to read or write fluently.
Our goal is simple: to provide the knowledge, support, and opportunities that allow children to build a future beyond the landfill.
Who Are Our Students?
Our students come from environments marked by extreme poverty, food insecurity, child labor, neglect, abuse, and chronic instability.
Many arrive with significant educational delays, limited literacy skills, interrupted schooling, and little previous academic support.
Over the years, we have observed learning challenges that are far more common than what would typically be expected in a traditional classroom. Many students struggle with reading, writing, working memory, attention, executive functioning, mathematical reasoning, and information retention.
We frequently observe learning profiles and challenges commonly associated with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, developmental delays, and the cognitive effects of chronic poverty, malnutrition, toxic stress, and trauma.
These difficulties are not signs of a lack of intelligence or potential. They are often the visible consequences of years of adversity.
For many children, educational challenges are only one part of a much larger reality.
Why Traditional Education Often Fails Them
Most educational systems are designed around the assumption that children arrive at school rested, fed, safe, and ready to learn; our students often arrive carrying a very different reality.
Some work inside the landfill before or after school. Others have experienced food scarcity, unstable housing, family crises, abuse, neglect, or prolonged periods of school absence. Many have never received the individualized support necessary to overcome learning difficulties. Applying a traditional educational model without adaptation would leave many of these children behind.
We believe that learning happens best when children feel safe, supported, valued, and capable.
How Grace responds
Grace Honduras adapts education to the child rather than expecting the child to adapt to the system.
Our educational approach combines the Honduran National Basic Curriculum with educational resources from Susaeta Publishing, ALFASIC Accelerated Education Programs, and IHER Secondary Education.
Teachers provide:

Every student enrolled in Grace Honduras receives access to:

Families pay nothing; all educational costs are covered through the support of our partners and donors.
Educational Programs
Regular Education
Grace Honduras provides:
• Third-level grade of Preschool
• First Grade through Sixth Grade
Accelerated Education
For teenagers and overage students who have fallen behind academically, we offer:
• ALFASIC Level I
• ALFASIC Level II
• ALFASIC Level III
These accelerated levels allow students to complete two academic years within a single year, helping them recover lost educational opportunities.
High School Education
Through our partnership with IHER Honduras, Grace Honduras operates as an educational subsite, providing students with access to Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Grade education.
Educational Certification
As a nonprofit organization, Grace Honduras works through educational partnerships that allow students to receive official academic recognition and certification through:

Our Educational Philosophy
We believe every child possesses unique strengths, talents, and potential.
Education goes far beyond the transfer of information. It is the process of helping children discover their abilities, build confidence, develop identity, and imagine a future beyond survival.
Words of affirmation, emotional support, meaningful relationships, and consistent encouragement are not separate from education. They are essential parts of it.
We believe that when children begin to believe in themselves, they begin to invest in their own future.

The transformation we witness
The transformation we witness is not only academic; children also begin to form friendships, become more confident, improve personal hygiene habits, participate more actively in class, and learn to communicate, collaborate, and solve problems.
Food security improves energy levels and concentration.
Many who initially arrive withdrawn, fearful, and emotionally dysregulated gradually become more engaged, socially connected, and hopeful.
Academically, students strengthen literacy skills, improve numeracy, develop writing abilities, and increase information retention despite significant learning barriers.
The journey is long, and much work remains.
But every year we see children move closer to opportunities that once seemed impossible.
Beyond the Landfill
Every day, children walk through the gates of Grace Honduras carrying far more than schoolbooks; some carry hunger, some carry trauma, some carry years of missed educational opportunities.
Yet every day we also witness something remarkable.
Children learn, grow, discover talents they never knew they had, and begin to believe they have a future.
