ENDLESS MERCY

Isaiah 43:19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

Without hesitating and saying a word I got inside the house, with a broken rooftop and old wood a lot of windy came inside, a ground floor and of course dirt all over the house. Inside a hammock was Dario, crying incessantly, naked, not even wearing a diaper and with several mosquito bites all around his body. Paola took a baby bottle, whose cap was missing and a million flies were in it, she just shooked it and put it in Dario’s mouth.

We just stare at each other with our social worker and said: “We need to take him to the nursery”. We don’t have enough space, food or beds” said the social worker replied. “We’re full”.

  • “I still don’t know what we are going to do but we’re taking them tomorrow.”

In one occasion I went to visit one our student’s home that had skipped class for more than three days. When I got home, I found her busy taking care of her younger cousins, between them there was Dulce (a three year old sweet girl), Isis (One year old baby) and Dario of two months. It caught my attention Isis and Dulce’s blackened face because they were eating coal that was left there from the day before. They were naked and hungry.

I asked Paola why she didn’t attend school, she told me her grandmother asked her to stayed with her cousins because she had to go to work to the trash dump and look for something to eat to bring home for them. That was the reason why she hadn’t attended to classes. Paola was only eight years old and she was babysitting one toddler and two babies. This is a common activity in the community, kids taking care of kids.

The constant weeping inside the house wouldn’t let me talk to Paola.

  • “Who’s crying?” I asked.

  • “It’s Daisy’s baby” (Mother of Dulce, Isis, Kevin, Wilson and Dario)

  • “How old is the baby?”

  • “Two months”

Their growth, nutrition and health took over six months to get back and their growth still hasn’t got to normal but they are safe.
